Hardwood floors are a great investment in a home. They are durable and they will outlast other flooring options and give extra value to the home. This is why it is so important that you take good care of all of the hardwood floors in your home. One way of doing that is to make sure that you are refinishing the hardwood as it's needed. This is to not only keep the floors looking nice but to protect them. To figure out whether your hardwood floors need to be refinished, check out the following:
Scrapes And Splinters
The presence of a few scrapes on the hardwood floor is not automatically a reason to break out the refinishing tools. However, if there is an excessive amount of light marks in the wood or you and your family are starting to get splinters from it, it is time to do some refinishing work. You do not want to wait too long because the more damage there is, the more it will take to do the repairs.
Water Absorption
A good and easy way to test whether the existing finish is wearing thin is to use water. You will only need a tablespoon or so of water. Take the water and pour it onto the wood floor in an area that gets the most foot traffic. After all, this would be the area where the finish would wear thin the soonest. You will need to refinish the floors if the water is quickly absorbed into the wood. If the water beads up and does not get absorbed, then the hardwood floor finish is fine.
Color Correction
You might simply decide that you no longer like the color or tint that was used the last time the hardwood floors were refinished. You might have changed all of your decor and have a completely new style now. Luckily for you, you do not have to wait for the floor to need refinishing. You can simply have it refinished because you want to. Take a little time to go over the wood stain finishes that would complement your home and add good value.
While this is a project you can do on your own with the right tools, it might be better if a contractor or flooring professional does it for you. They have a lot of experience and will take a lot less time to get the refinishing project complete.
